Mission Outreach

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” – Matthew 25-35

Cunningham United Methodist Church (CUMC) places great emphasis on Missions. Our church has a “big heart and busy hands” and a highly active Mission/Outreach team that focuses on three (3) areas: Community, Regional, and International.

COMMUNITY MISSIONS

  • Congregational Care: Follow up with congregation members who are ill, homebound or in senior and assisted living situations, providing visitations, phone calls, cards, and meals.
  • Once a week, Cunningham is the Wednesday site for the All Blessings Flow (ABF) mobile unit. ABF is a Charlottesville, VA based charity that provides medical equipment free of charge to those in need. From 10am to Noon, our volunteers meet people at the church site who are making donations of gently used medical equipment and assist individuals in finding items they may need. We also deliver and pick up medical items to those who are homebound.
  • Our church supports the Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity through a yearly special ministry collection. We have several members who participate in the building of the Habitat houses, and our church also provides a bucket of cleaning supplies to welcome the new homeowners.
  • Fluvanna County, VA has a Meals on Wheels which Cunningham supports through volunteers, food and toiletries donations as needed throughout the year.
  • Feeding Fluvanna is an annual event that takes place in October. The food and money donated goes to Monticello Area Community Action Agency (MACAA) for the Fluvanna County Food Bank. Our church provides volunteers and collects non-perishable food. In 2022, we added 725 pounds to the total.
  • In December CUMC participates in Happy Face, a county-wide Christmas “party” for children that includes gifts, food, clothes, and a visit from Santa.

REGIONAL MISSIONS

  • Two Mondays a month, we participate in a ministry called Bread and Blessings where we prepare and serve lunches in Charlottesville at First United Methodist Church. In the summer and on Monday holidays, some of our church youth join us. Bread and Blessings is part of a larger ministry in Charlottesville where meals are offered to people who are in need every day of the week.
  • Cunningham UMC works with On Our Own, a peer recovery center for adults located in Charlottesville. We do small repair jobs at their building when needed, such as painting and wheelchair repair.
  • Our church supports the Fluvanna Women’s Prison Ministry with a monthly donation to the Grace Within Chaplain Program. We also provide items for the prison’s Christmas gift programs.
  • The Mission/Outreach team sends donations for a yearly summer camp and reading program that takes place in Roanoke, VA called Kid’s Soar.

GLOBAL MISSIONS

  • Cunningham reaches out for global missions through United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to assist in disasters in the US and globally. Each year, we have a special collection for UMCOR where 100% of donations go to the needy.
  • The Cunningham Mission/Outreach team is always open to new ministry activities as we find out about them. We are also open to new members to our committee.
